Methylene blue follows a dose-dependent curve: low levels enhance mitochondrial activity, while higher levels can lead to cellular stress. Our approach is rooted in precision and safety. Unlike non-prescription sources, EllieMD provides a prescription-grade that falls well within the scientifically established therapeutic window.

Methylene Blue is a prescription medication that has been used in medicine for more than a century. While its FDA-approved uses involve treating specific blood disorders at much higher doses, low-dose Methylene Blue is sometimes prescribed off-label under clinical supervision to support cellular energy, mitochondrial function, oxidative balance, and cognitive performance. Early research suggests potential benefits for brain activity, memory pathways, and healthy aging.
This therapy may be suitable for individuals looking to support mental clarity, focus, cellular energy, and longevity-focused wellness. Many patients seek Methylene Blue to help enhance cognitive processing, promote mitochondrial efficiency, or support resilience during periods of high mental or physical demand. Only a licensed provider can determine appropriateness based on your health history and current medications.
Each prescription contains 40 capsules, which is designed to last approximately two months following the recommended schedule of taking one 10 mg capsule five days per week with two days off. Patients may choose which two days they take off each week, as long as they maintain the prescribed dosing cadence.
Take one 10 mg capsule daily for 5 days on and 2 days off, repeating each week for the duration of therapy. This low-dose intermittent approach reflects the dose-dependent nature of Methylene Blue, where higher doses may reduce the beneficial mitochondrial and cognitive effects targeted. Always follow the instructions provided by your prescribing provider.
Methylene Blue is taken orally as a capsule. It may be taken with or without food, although some individuals find that pairing it with a small snack helps reduce mild nausea. Your medication will include clear instructions, and your licensed provider can guide you on safe use.
This medication may not be appropriate for everyone. Individuals with the following conditions should not use Methylene Blue and must inform their provider:
- G6PD Deficiency or high risk of G6PD
- Abnormal kidney function
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Use of antidepressants or other serotonergic medications
- History of serotonin syndrome
- Allergy to thiazine dyes
- Under 18 years of age
Always consult your primary care physician before beginning treatment.
Some patients report mild side effects such as:
- Headache or dizziness
- Nausea or abdominal discomfort
- Restlessness or mild anxiety
- Temporary blue or green discoloration of urine or stool
These effects are typically temporary and dose-related. If you experience concerning or persistent symptoms, contact your provider immediately.
Some medications interact dangerously with Methylene Blue, and certain combinations should never be used. You should NOT take Methylene Blue if you are currently using:
- SSRIs, SNRIs, or MAO inhibitors
- Tricyclic antidepressants
- Lithium
- Linezolid
- 5-HTP or other serotonergic supplements
- ADHD stimulants (Adderall, Vyvanse)
Combining Methylene Blue with serotonergic medications can cause serotonin syndrome, a serious and potentially life-threatening condition. It is essential that you disclose every medication and supplement you take to both your primary care provider and your prescribing clinician.
They will ultimately determine whether Methylene Blue is appropriate for you, as some medications and health conditions make this therapy unsafe. Always follow your clinician’s guidance and immediately inform them if any new medications are prescribed to you in the future.
Some individuals belong to ethnic groups with a higher prevalence of G6PD deficiency, an inherited condition that can make Methylene Blue unsafe because it may trigger oxidative stress and hemolytic anemia in affected patients.
For this reason, the prescribing physician may require G6PD laboratory testing before treatment can be safely approved. This decision is based on your medical history, risk factors, and overall health profile.
If testing is required, a lab sheet will be provided so you can complete the G6PD enzyme test at a licensed laboratory such as Quest or LabCorp. This ensures your treatment plan is both safe and appropriate for your individual needs.
Yes. Even though your prescription is reviewed by a licensed clinician, it is important to coordinate this therapy with your primary care physician—especially if you have underlying health conditions or changes to your medication list. Your primary provider has the most complete view of your medical history and can help ensure safe, integrated care.
Methylene Blue is a compounded medication and has not been evaluated or approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for longevity, cognitive enhancement, or mitochondrial support. It is prescribed off-label based on clinician discretion and emerging research, and must be dispensed by a 503A compounding pharmacy. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Individual results may vary. Always consult your primary care physician before beginning any new treatment.
